Characterization of arterial hypertension in older adults

Arterial hypertension is the chronic noncommunicable disease that most affects older adults. Objective: to characterize arterial hypertension in older adults from offices 127 and 156 of the "Hermanos Cruz" Polyclinic in Pinar del Rio between January 2021 and July 2023. Material and method: descriptive observational research was carried out from January 2021 to June 2023. The universe was made up of 386 hypertensive older adults and coincided with the sample. The absolute and relative percentage frequency was used. Results: there was a predominance of the female sex with 256 patients for 66.32% compared to the male sex, represented by 37.56%, predominating the age group from 60 to 64 with 151 patients for 39.12%. The predominant risk factor in the hypertensive population was the presence of a family history of hypertension (85.75%), followed by a sedentary lifestyle (48.19%). Most older adults (50.13%) used a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment. Conclusions: arterial hypertension was characterized by being predominant in the female sex, having a large family history and the use of combined treatment
