Introduction: Acute myocardial infarction is the main cause of death among cardiovascular diseases and primary percutaneous coronary intervention is the treatment of choice in infarcted patients with ST segment elevation.
Objective: To describe the results in the application of percutaneous coronary intervention after successful fibrinolysis in patients with acute myocardial infarction.
Methods: Observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study in patients with acute myocardial infarction treated at the “Saturnino Lora Torres” Provincial Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, in the period from January 2019 to December 2021. The patients were chosen through sampling. non-probabilistic intentional type.
Results: The average age was 57 years, with a predominance of males (70%). The main risk factors were high blood pressure (49%), smoking (45%) and diabetes mellitus (35%). 78% of patients used aspirin in treatment, followed by ACE inhibitors. 91% 91% presented chest pain and dyspnea in 67%. The most frequent topographic presentations were anterior (35%), inferior (33%) and extensive (18%). 59% affected only one vessel and a stent was placed in 78% of the total.
Conclusions: The results showed insufficiencies in the adequate treatment of patients with acute myocardial infarction.
