Port-Cath Habilitation Standards: Impact of Nursing Education on Improving Patient Safety

Introduction: The intervention project carried out in a hospital in Rosario aimed to standardize the procedures for enabling the Port-Cath device, mostly used in oncology patients. In view of the variability in nursing practices, the need to unify criteria to guarantee patient safety and durability of the device was identified. In the context of the Argentine healthcare system of 2023, characterized by budgetary constraints and a high workload of healthcare personnel, constant training and standardization of practices were highlighted as essential priorities. The project proposed to address these needs through an educational and reflexive approach, benefiting both patients and the healthcare team.
Development: The intervention included surveys and focus groups to identify prior knowledge and inconsistencies in Port-Cath enabling practices. Subsequently, theoretical-practical trainings led by oncology specialists were developed, using simulations, video analysis and discussions. These activities allowed nurses to reflect on their mistakes and improve their technical skills. The use of visual tools such as an “idea cloud” facilitated learning assessment. Expected outcomes included a significant increase in the knowledge of trained staff and a reduction in device-associated complications. This model sought to be replicable in other institutions, addressing structural problems in the healthcare system.
Conclusions: The project demonstrated the importance of standardization and continuous training to improve the quality of health care. By reducing risks associated with the use of the Port-Cath, it promoted a safer environment for patients and professionals. This initiative laid the groundwork for future interventions, strengthening the Argentine healthcare system and fostering a culture of learning and continuous improvement
