Ischemic heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the world and in Cuba, with a significant increase in women. An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out with the aim of evaluating the prognostic value of fasting glycemia determined in the first 24 hours of admission in women with a diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) hospitalized in the coronary service of the Carlos J. Finlay HMC during 2015-2017. The universe consisted of 250 women over 20 years of age with a diagnosis of ACS and the sample consisted of 224 patients. Two groups were formed to compare each other: study group (≥6.11 mmol/L) with high fasting glucose value and control group (<6.11 mmol/L) with normal value. The mean glycemia value was higher in the study group being statistically significant (p < 0.000001). Age did not show significant difference between groups. HT (p<0.007), smoking (p<0.05) and ACS (p<0.004) in any of their clinical variants were statistically significant variables. Death as a complication was present in only 15 patients in the study group, representing 24.1% of deaths. There were no significant statistical differences in terms of coronary angiography results, since not all patients with ACS presented indications for this study.
Conclusions: The results of the study suggest that an elevated baseline fasting glycemia on admission in female patients diagnosed with ACS is a predictor of risk of death and complications during the hospital phase.
